  • A passenger train has collided with a freight train in South Carolina killing two and injuring 70

In December, three people were killed after a company train derailed in Washington.

USA freight rail corporations have resisted implementing Positive Train Control (PTC) on their networks, citing high costs, while politicians and industry insiders note the life-saving utility of the globally-accepted rail technology.

"It's a disgusting thing to see, to understand the force involved", the governor said after touring the scene. One auto in the middle of the Amtrak train was snapped in half, forming a V off to one side of the tracks. "It was quite a crash".

President Donald Trump is leading a group of people across the nation who are expressing grief over the train collision in SC that's left two people dead. Investigators and emergency preparedness officials swarmed the accident scene early Sunday.

He said he was taken to a hospital and treated for a bump on his head and whiplash and that his wife was not injured.

Lexington Medical Center said it received 27 patients, most with minor injuries.

As noted by Politico, "Sunday's crash is the third fatal Amtrak crash within six weeks and comes less than a week after a chartered train carrying GOP lawmakers hit a trash truck in Crozet, Va., killing one of the truck's occupants".

The crash happened near a switchyard about 10 miles south of Columbia, South Carolina, where trains hauling cars are loaded and unloaded.

The two people killed were Amtrak employees, according to South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster.

Michael Kempf, 54, of Savannah, Georgia were the conductor and engineer, respectively, of the Amtrak train.

The National Transportation Safety Board will be looking into the matter as the lead investigative agency, Allen said. "Next thing you know, we came to a stop".

An NTSB spokesperson said the agency will not speculate on what caused the crash.
