White House confirms Trump eyeing parade

  • French President Emmanuel Macron US President Donald Trump and US first lady Melania Trump at the annual Bastille Day military parade in Paris

"The marching orders were: I want a parade like the one in France", a military official told The Washington Post. This is a President who has openly questioned his own Justice Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation, suggesting there may be a conspiracy at the highest levels seeking to weaken him.

The plan for the parade was confirmed by White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Tuesday. He was reportedly dazzled by such a parade commemorating Bastille Day during a trip to France previous year.

The Washington, D.C. City Council - which is dominated by Democrats - mocked the idea of the city hosting a parade featuring military hardware. And furthermore, they'll liken him to Hitler and every other dictator in history who's held a parade as a show of strength.

The anonymous White House official downplayed these concerns by telling the Post that such an event would be "the opposite" of totalitarian, but rather a "celebration of the men and women who give us freedom", and a "warning" to its enemies. From all accounts, we're doing this because France has an annual Bastille Day Parade and when Trump visited France recently, he was invited to be in the reviewing stand alongside President Macron.

News about Trump wanting to have a military parade was first reported in January when he reportedly told top Pentagon personnel that he wants a parade like the one in France.

As the world's dominant military power, the US traditionally avoids parading war weapons through the streets. "I mean, we're going to be showing our military".

"It was one of the greatest parades I've ever seen", Trump said later.

A major parade in the USA capital is likely to be an expensive undertaking, with The Washington Post noting that transporting military hardware to the city is likely to cost millions of dollars.

James Lankford, R-Oklahoma. "Our issue is we have a lot of military parades around the country". There is a reason why U.S. presidents don't hold military parades because the country is not a military dictatorship.

President George H.W. Bush's military parade to commemorate the end of the Gulf War in June 1991 cost about $12 million, according to a C-Span report that year.

But the President found some support as well, mostly from his Republican corner.
