Rescue workers work at the wreckage of a US-Bangla airplane after it crashed at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, Nepal March 12, 2018. "We can not claim this definitely at the moment, but we are suspecting that Kathmandu ATC tower might have misled our pilots to land on the wrong runway", Imran Asif, CEO of US-Bangla Airlines, told reporters in Dhaka.
In 2015 one of its planes overshot the runway on landing at Saidpur in northwest Bangladesh. The airport's general manager said that the pilot failed to follow instructions from the ATC. While the airline blames air traffic control, the airport says the plane landed from the wrong direction.
A recording of the conversation suggests confusion about which end of the runway the aircraft was cleared to land on.
Twenty-two passengers - mostly sitting on the plane's right side - managed to free themselves from burning wreckage by climbing through the plane's windows or were pulled from the fuselage by passengers and rescuers, according to media report. Nepal army spokesman Brigadier General Gokul Bhandari said 50 people had died in the crash. The accident is the worst aviation disaster to hit Nepal in almost three decades. It did not provide the nationalities of the four crew members.
