Ms May said she wanted a "deep and comprehensive" trade deal with no tariffs and quotas at the EU - UK border supported by a "comprehensive system of mutual recognition".

She said: "If we were to accept passporting, we'd just be a rule-taker - we'd have to abide by the rules that were being set elsewhere, and given the importance of financial stability of ensuring the City of London, we can't just take the same rules without any say in them".

She maintained that her view of future British-EU ties was credible and expressed confidence that she would reach a good deal, although she appealed for the bloc to be more flexible in its negotiations.

"The reality is that we all need to face up to some hard facts. We want competition between us to be fair and open, and we want reliable transparent means of verifying we are meeting our commitments and resolving our disputes", according to May.

As an Arctic blast swept Britain, the U.K. Prime Minister sent her warmest words yet to Brexit negotiators in Brussels.

Speaking about her keynotes address, the culmination of the "Road to Brexit" series of speeches by her top team, she said: "I was being straight with people".

The speech was as much about tone as it was about laying out Britain's negotiating position.

She stood firm in calling for a different relationship than Canada, Norway and Turkey have with the European Union, declaring: "If this is cherry picking, then every trade agreement is cherry picking".

The speech was well received by her confidence and supply partners the DUP, with the party's leader Arlene Foster "particularly welcoming" a commitment to "strengthen" the United Kingdom union.

A report in the Mail on Sunday suggested Mr Johnson's allies believed Mrs May's chief of staff Gavin Barwell was behind the leak, in order to stop any rebellion over the PM's Brexit plan.

Northerly winds of 10-13 miles per hour will make it feel like the teens in the morning to low to mid 20s in the afternoon. Police and firefighters rescued people from vehicles stranded in high water Tuesday at two sites in Janesville.

"We must hope that they will be as positive and pragmatic as Theresa May".

It will be very hard for May to clinch the bespoke trade deal she seeks with the European Union within the given time frame while keeping her deeply divided party on side and parliament, where she has only a narrow majority, broadly supportive. "Not something that would take 10 years", said New Financial, a think-tank that promotes capital markets in Europe.

In it, she rejected as "unacceptable" proposals from Brussels to keep customs union arrangements in Northern Ireland.

He said border checks would not inevitably result in a return to violence.

In Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon said it was "bizarre" that the PM had accepted access to the single market, "the world's biggest marketplace and one around eight times bigger than the UK's alone", would be reduced yet said she would leave them anyway, "even though her own government's analysis shows this will cost jobs and cut living standards".

She dismissed the commission's insistence that it would not allow "cherry-picking" of rights and obligations, insisting that this was a part of any trade negotiation.

"Yes, there will be ups and downs in the months ahead".

Mrs May said she was pleased that Irish PM Leo Varadkar had agreed to form the three-way talks to look at her proposals.

"By following the course I have set out today, I am confident we will get there and deliver the right outcome for Britain and the European Union".
