A statue of social activist and rationalist leader EV Ramasamy, better known as Periyar, was vandalised in Vellore, Tamil Nadu, on Tuesday, March 6. Raja has since removed the Facebook post and said it was published without his permission. Interestingly, prior to these interventions, some BJP leaders had endorsed the attacks and Tripura governor Tathagatha Roy had tweeted, apropos of the anti-Lenin iconoclasm, that a newly elected government can undo the work of a previous government. The attackers at the BJP's office in Coimbatore came in a three-wheeler and hurled the petrol bomb inside the office. "So I can not disregard them by demolishing their statues just as we can not tolerate demotion of statues of Netaji or Swamiji", she said. BJP's supporters recently brought down a statue of Lenin in Tripura creating much uproar. In the interview, Deodhar details how he changed the BJP in Tripura by reaching out to people in the state.

Moreover, if every new government takes it upon itself to pull down old statues and erect new ones, what's to prevent another government of the opposing ideology from pulling down your icons to put up its own?

Bhubaneswar: The aftermath of the Tripura elections has witnessed mayhem and violence, resulting in the toppling of the statue of Russian Communist revolutionary Vladimir Lenin. The vandalism was followed by several protests across the state.
