  • Serena Williams celebrates after making a winning return to the WTA Tour at Indian Wells

The 23-time Grand Slam champion is competing at the elite Indian Wells hardcourt tournament this week, her first tour action since her 2017 Australian Open triumph.

Serena Williams showed off her best electric slide this week during the Desert Smash at La Quinta Resort at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. "So, I expect her to be at full flight".

The BNP Paribas Open's official Twitter account said: 'Two-time champion Serena Williams set to face Zarina Diyas in the first round of the #BNPPO18 in her first match since winning the Australian Open previous year and giving birth to daughter Olympia'.

Had the tennis superstar not known her body as well as she did and advocated for doctors to listen to her, she might not be here today.

"It is something I have thought about and I would like to keep thinking about it", she told BBC tennis correspondent Russell Fuller.

"She is one of the best players so it is good that she is back, especially after being a mom".

"It's been really, really hard, but I keep going, and I know that I might not be at my best yet, but I'm getting there and every day is a new day and every day I should be getting better. As long as I'm moving forward, even if it's at a turtle's pace, I'm OK with that".

It is "heartbreaking" black women in the United States are more likely than white women to die from complications in pregnancy or childbirth, says tennis great Serena Williams. "I just want to do the best that I can". She will face Diyas, and if she manages to win, she'll take on No. 29 Kiki Bertens in the next round.

"I've been trying to get back into playing tennis, which is something that I love the most, and to have this experience with Serena who is my greatest friend, means so much". If Venus had any idea she and Serena could meet so early in the Indian Wells draw, she wasn't letting on.

"I think women deserve a little more equal play time on the centre courts outside of the marquee players", she told the BBC. Navratilova further added that Serena's game style is something that will help her get back to the top.
