Tillerson also warned against blind acceptance of Chinese investment, warning African countries to "consider the terms of those investments" lest they "forfeit sovereignty".

08 de marzo de 2018, 10:28Addis Ababa, Mar 8 (Prensa Latina) U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and African Union (AU) Commission President Moussa Faki Mahamat met today at the headquarters of the continental organization to discuss security, counterterrorism, trade, development, corruption and conflicts.

The trip is his first to Africa, which has since turned to China in trade and investment agreements.

In Ethiopia, Tillerson's first stop, China has built an electric rail line connecting the capital to the port in neighboring Djibouti and is involved in scores of other projects throughout the country that have made Chinese nationals a ubiquitous sight on the streets.

On Thursday, during his first trip to Africa, the USA diplomat told a news conference in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, that African leaders need to carefully consider their agreements with China.

"I think the United States commitment to Africa is quite clear in terms of the importance we place on the relationship", Tillerson said.

"We want to see responsible development and transparent free market practices that foster greater political stability on the continent", he said.

Coveney warns United Kingdom border proposals just "a starting point" in Brexit talks
In it, she rejected as "unacceptable" proposals from Brussels to keep customs union arrangements in Northern Ireland . The speech was as much about tone as it was about laying out Britain's negotiating position.

The growing Chinese lending to the continent has also attracted criticism from some Africans, who say China's agenda is to feed its appetite for African raw materials like oil, timber, and minerals, and secure contracts for its firms.

Tillerson, sitting beside the Chairperson to the African Union, avoided directly answering questions about President Trump's alleged vulgar language in a discussion about immigrants from African nations - though a journalist bluntly asked him if he agreed with Mr. Trump's controversial comments.

He also solicited African support in pressuring North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons.

Tillerson argued that this US approach stood in "stark contrast" to Chinese methods in Africa, which encourage "dependency using opaque contracts, predatory loan practices, and corrupt deals that mire nations in debt and undercut their sovereignty, denying them their long-term, self-sustaining growth".

Tillerson spoke in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, during a joint news conference with the Ethiopian foreign minister. He noted that he received the letter from Mr. Trump reaffirming the USA commitment to Africa and said that sentiment was "personified" with Tillerson's visit.

"I believe that this incident is of the past", Faki said.

For the record, Tillerson is to visit from the 6th to the 13th of March seven African countries: Ethiopia, Kenya, Djibouti, Nigeria and Chad.
