Trump dangles Israel trip for new embassy, mum on peace plan

  • Israeli police question PM Netanyahu in corruption case

US President Donald Trump said on Monday he might travel to Israel for the opening of the USA embassy in Jerusalem as he and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu presented a united front against Iran in White House talks. A day before the Israeli leader sat for talks with Trump, Kushner paid him a visit at Blair House, the presidential guest quarters across Pennsylvania Avenue, along with other top administration officials.

With an eye toward Trump's grandiose side, Netanyahu put Trump in line with great men in Jewish history - from Cyrus the Great, the Persian king who predicted Jews would return to Jerusalem, to Lord Arthur Balfour, whose declaration spurred "the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people", and former U.S. President Harry Truman, the first world leader to recognize Israel. "I have the greatest respect for the American Jewish community", he went on, noting he was scheduled to address the American Israel Public Affairs Committee on Tuesday.

Welcoming Netanyahu to his Oval Office, Trump said the relationship between the two countries is at its best. But any accord will be colored by recent actions taken by Trump to formally recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital and begin moving the U.S. embassy there from Tel Aviv.

Trump upset allies and roiled the Arab world a year ago by announcing that the USA was moving its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Trump said he is considering attending the mid-May opening of the controversial US embassy in Jerusalem.

Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law and Middle East adviser, attended some but not all of the lengthy session, Netanyahu said later. And I can tell you, we are working very hard on doing that.

Kushner has been leading efforts to broker an Israeli-Palestinian peace proposal. "And we seek also to broaden that peace to the Palestinians".

"The Palestinians, I think, are wanting to come back to the table very badly", Trump said.

Netanyahu also praised Trump, saying that his move to recognise Jerusalem as the Israeli capital would be remembered throughout the ages. The two steps enraged the Palestinians, who claim part of Jerusalem for the capital of an eventual state and accuse Trump of abandoning the USA role of honest broker.

The Associated Press reported that on Monday, a close confidant of Netanyahu agreed to turn state's witness in one of the cases, adding to the pressure already on him.

Israeli police have recommended indicting Netanyahu for bribery, fraud, and breach of trust in two cases. In this case, the Netanyahus allegedly received positive coverage in the Walla news site in exchange for giving regulatory and financial benefits to Bezeq, a giant telecom company whose owner also holds Walla.

Israel is increasingly anxious that Trump is backsliding on a pledge to "fix" or dismantle the 2015 Iran nuclear deal. According to information leaked to the Israeli media, an agreement apparently would have allowed the prime minister to receive more favorable coverage from the newspaper if he agreed to weaken the status of a rival daily newspaper owned by US casino magnate Sheldon Adelson.

Iran and its activities in Syria and Lebanon are a profound concern to Israel, and Netanyahu made clear Iran is his highest priority.

Netanyahu has denied any wrongdoing and has not been named a suspect in the case.

ESTRIN: He's talking to the pro-Israel group AIPAC tomorrow morning. Only 7 smaller countries aligned themselves with the United States and Israel.

"Iran has not given up its nuclear ambitions", he said.

She got even louder applause when she said "Jerusalem was, is, and will always be the capital of Israel".

At the same time, the meeting comes just after the United States announced it will open its embassy in Jerusalem in May to coincide with Israel's 70th anniversary celebrations.
